Are You a Hero to Anyone April 20, 2011

Each Sunday, I try to do personal interviews with my boys. I have them come down to my office and we just talk. This past Sunday I was visiting with my 5 year old son Zion. We were just finishing our interview and were about to pray together and race up stairs to eat dinner when, out of the blue he said…

“Dad, if you die, I'll miss you.” Then he turned away and tried to hide the fact that he had started crying. It was so tender, and so sweet.

It reminded me of a video I posted on my old blog several years ago. It will make you cry and cause you to ask yourself, am I making a difference in anyones life. I hope you are. And if you're not, today's a great day to start. Please share and comment below. Enjoy the vid.

No matter how many times I see the video about this father and son, it never fails to elicit great pride in what we, as human beings, are capable of. I wish all of us could embody such love and self-lessness.

I am a mentor for children who are physically and/or sexually abused in Utah County. We are paired up with a boy or girl between 5-14 years old and we take them out once a week for a few hours for six months. It is called the Children’s Justice Center and if you are looking for someone or something to do, volunteer here and help someone see their potential and to see the good in life. Speak with Annette Dyer at 801-360-3868. If you aren’t in Utah County or Utah itself, she can direct you to your local Center and help get you started. This video was great and if it gave you the motivation to do good then put that energy to work. Thanks Chris for sharing what is most important in life.

Just watched this video with my dad, and he’s eyes fill with tears when he said to me… “I’m hoping to have more days to spend with you and to your Ate and Kuya (your brother’s and sisters).” i really touched on his words and that’s the first time i heard him to speak like that.

I remember when i was a kid, I scared of his large voice every time he speak. But now, he’s turning 70yrs old this yr. and I’m scared to come the time that i will no longer hear his voice. surely i’m gonna miss him when that time comes =(.

I’m proud of My Dad for many reasons…

    Thanks for this post Chris!
I learned a lot from this site.

One of the greatest gifts that my husband and I have ever received was having a child with Autism. We never treated it as a disability but rather a blessing. He constantly reminds us of what God has always been teaching us… to have unconditional love and profound humility. Our son, indeed, humbles us and makes us appreciate life and God’s eternal blessings. He is our hero for he embraces life with love, laughter and peace. I’ve have watched this video many times and you’re right, it never fails for me to ball my eyes out. Thank you for sharing with us a constant reminder of how precious our lives truly are and how much we should humbly appreciate it.
(Not to change the subject, but) It was really awesome to see you and Skye in Oklahoma. That was one of the highlights of our trip. )
    Peace and blessings,
    Leilanie (Tumambing) Gay

Thank You Mr. Hughes. I’ve seen this before and seeing it again touched me just as much as the first time. A true example of what being a parent and a role model for others is all about.

Thank you for sharing with us that precious moment with your son Zion. Such moments are priceless. And I love this video! It demonstrates how time well spent with our children goes a very long way. When one of my adult sons was eight years old he was diagnosed with a progressive and debilitating genetic disorder. I made a commitment to teach him to appreciate the many blessings in his life in spite of the challenges that lay ahead. He is a wonderful person who enjoys life to the fullest. He is MY hero!

Isabel, thank you for sharing. Love that your sons is your hero and good for you!! I love this video as it prompts me to consider, what else can I do? How better can I love? CSH

Thanks so much for sharing your son’s story, it is so touching. This is a very inspiring video! I’d never seen it before, so of course I cried my eyes out! Wow, what a great love story! We all think we’re showing our children and grandchildren how much we love them, but of all the sacrifices we make for them, how many of us make this kind of sacrifice for their happiness……truly inspiring! Thank you so much, Chris!

Loretta, glad you enjoyed that. Cried my eyes out too. It is a lovely depiction of how much more we can all do and how we take so much for granted all that we have. Also, its a reminder that a perceived challenge can be a blessing in deed. CSH

Love the story of how much this father gives his love to his son and do not look down or call him name. How many time have people call each other name because the other person look or act differently in term of skills, look and intelligence? This is a wake up call that we should show more love and encouragement to make this world a beautiful world to stay.

i have not been on your page for a month its funny how things pull you right where you need. I have many pictures on my wall  these two great people sit up there to show that my struggles are far less then ricks, I been having some money hard time much like most america. I have so many thing in front of me if I would take action. I fight over that word and what I should do with it. every one gets in that place where they say how can I do it. i need to stop looking at tomorrow and working today. every thing I do is for my son. but so much I vcould do but hold back because of sucess no matter what it looks like. I think the hard part is I see the daily changes that make me grow to talking to strangers and getting me what I want in life, I thank god I found PD because every one around me calling me and telling me its not working or find a better job or stay in the JOB mind set. its not for me. best part of my night and my day is seen my son sleep in his bed next to me. he keeps me going . I can go on and on . but this video just remoinds me to keep trucking and im far better today then I was three short years ago. thanks for this page MR hughes. thanks
