The Basic System for Success + Family Rodeo Highlights July 23, 2010

NOTE: Today's content would be better written than put on video. So my show today is some highlight footage from the rodeo we went to last night. I couldn't resist. And I threw in a pic or two of my boys. Good times! But, the training I promised you can be read here. Enjoy!

In 1999 I heard an audio tape from a man named Jim Rohn. I had never heard of him before, and didn't know what to expect. But I was told it was a good tape, so I listened to it… about 100 times. There was something about him that I loved… that resonated with me. I never wanted to stop listening to him. I can remember sitting in my car in the grocery store parking lot for 20 or 30 minutes, so I could finish the tape, one more time, before I went in to do my shopping.

During my lunch break at work, I would literally run to my car, put the sun roof back (sounds glamorous, but don't be too enamored :) ), recline my seat, set the alarm on my phone (just in case I fell asleep, which I did many times), and listen to the great Jim Rohn. Again, and again, and again. Eventually, I bought every book and audio he ever made, and I attended several of his seminars. Even today, after all these years, two of my most prized possessions are a photo with him, and his book The Seasons of Life, which he signed for me. And since he passed away, it has become an even greater treasure.

So am I a groupie, some of you may be wondering? No, the furthest thing from it. I am however, so grateful to him, for his teachings, which more than anyone elses, attributed to my success. Though I have benefited from a multiplicity of voices, it's Mr. Rohn's which continues to reverberate in my soul. With his words, his wisdom and his philosophy, he reached out to me in the quagmire of poverty and ignorance, and placed my feet securely on the solid ground of my new future.

I will never forget the first time I heard him say, “You can go from wherever you are to where you want to be in six years. Any six. From 18 to 24. 24 to 30. 60 to 66. Any six years.” He added this caveat,  ”If you will go on an intensified learning curve.” I believed him. And I went on that intensified learning curve. And six years later I was living a life at 33 years old, that most people will never experience in their lifetime. And, I am so grateful.

What he called an “intensified learning curve” I call the Basic System for Success. I have adapted it over the years as I have taught it to others and have systematized it so as to become a systematic method of operation, rather than just some good ideas. It' spelled out below.

THE BASIC SYSTEM FOR SUCCESS

1. READ 10+ PAGES OF A GOOD BOOK, EVERY DAY.

2. LISTEN TO 1+ EDUCATIONAL/MOTIVATIONAL CD EVERY DAY (ABOUT 45 MINUTES).

3. ATTEND 1+ LIVE SEMINAR, WORKSHOP AND/OR CLASS EVERY 90 DAYS.

4. ASSOCIATE WITH PEOPLE WHO HAVE WHAT YOU WANT.

5. DISASSOCIATE WITH THOSE WHO ARE NEGATIVE AND UNSUPPORTIVE.

6. PUT INTO PRACTICE WHAT YOU LEARN FROM YOUR READING, LISTENING & FROM YOUR POSITIVE ASSOCIATIONS.

Don't be fooled by it's simplicity. There's a lot to it. Tomorrow, I'll be back in front of the camera going step by step on how to make this work for you.

Thank you so much Chris. I started a serious training program 20 years ago and kept it up for 10 or so years. Life came along and I backed off but never quit. I decided to get serious again and through my friend Mark found this site. Terrific stuff. As I get older my brain leaks more than it used to so I constantly need the input of the wonderful content like you are putting out there. One simple piece at a time.

Wow, thank you so much for this Chris. Sometimes we let ourselves get overwhelmed by thinking about the whole picture of what needs to be done before we can get where we are going, but reading this information and your basic system for success helps to put it into something more obtainable. You know what I mean? I'm not quite the writer you are yet, so bear with me. Anyway, your children are absolutely adorable. Thank you for posting the Rodeo highlights, that was fun to watch. Have a wonderful day!

I met Mr. Hughes about 4 ½ years ago. He was doing some training and said some things that really opened my eyes, as to the possibilities that were out there for me. From stage he gave simple direction, easy to understand steps. Anyone could do, I have been fortunate over the last few years to spend some additional time learning from him. The mentoring I have received has been incredible. I did not believe what was possible, was possible for Me!! I am starting to learn how to believe it’s all possible for me!
    Thanks Mr. Hughes

I love listening to Mr. Rohn's audio tapes! I listen to him at least twice each week since receiving my first one about three months ago! I was running errands one day with my 82-year-old mom and popped in one of Mr. Rohn's CDs from the “Take Charge of Your Life” series. I had already heard them all and I love his messages. Mom was listening for the first time and she loved them too. He makes so much sense and has a great way with words. Thank you for sharing your Basic System for Success here!

Isabel, you have made so many great comments, it's hard to keep up. Thank you! And, keep them coming. What is your favorite Jim Rohn teaching? Anyone can feel free to answer. C.S. Hughes

One of my favorite Jim Rohn messages is about leadership and the challenge of handling people in network marketing. He says something to the effect of getting people on board to follow a system “is like herding cats.” I laughed so hard when I heard that because it's so true: cats do what they want to do in their own time and some people are so uncoachable! I also love his message to avoid over-analyzing things: “I wouldn't take that class because that's just the way it is.” His humor and matter-of-fact thinking is priceless! I was so sad to learn that he died not too long ago in December 2009, but to me he is larger than life and will live on forever in his teachings from which everyone can benefit.

There will only be ONE Jim Rohn. So glad he created a library for us to enjoy in his absence. I will be writing about my favorite Jim Rohn teaching in a future post. It's in his book, “The Seasons of Life.” It's about the purpose of life. And I LOVE IT! So few people are willing to think like that, but it resonates with me 100%.

Hey Mr. CSH, On the 15th I woke up and declared to myself that all though there have been other starts, stops and re-starts in my life, there had to be a day that everything changed…. So I put a date on my decision. I then came across your shows and am now learning that my silent sabateur loves to see me quietly fail. I wish I could say that everything did change, but I suppose that if success were that easy everyone would be successful. I am loving your shows. Thanks for inspiring me and pointing the way to achieve my full potential. You are a true Sensei!

I can’t tell you what a difference these simple steps can make in a life…and how stopping these simple steps can throw things into an opposite spiral. I’ve done both and am happy to say doing these steps makes life feel more like a gift. Challenges always come and go, but when you are participating in things and associating with people that uplift and inspire it’s more about getting to the other side of the challenge instead of whining about, “why me”? Thank you, Mr. Hughes, for being an inspiration to so many, especially me :)
