In the 1980's, General Motors ran an advertising campaign for their Oldsmobile. In an effort to convince the younger generation that the Oldsmobile was not for old people, at the end of each commercial they would say, "This is not your father's Oldsmobile."
What they were really trying to say was, "Hey! Things have changed." And that's what I'm saying.
This is not your father's economy. This is not your father's world. This is a whole new world. Things have changed, and it's vital that you know how they have changed, why they have changed and what it means to you.
"We need to realize we are not experiencing a minor, or even major change in the world. It's a monumental paradigm shift in the way we live, make money and interact in the market place.
"A paradigm shift is defined as a radical change in personal beliefs, complex systems or organizations, replacing the former way of thinking, or organizing, with a radically different way of thinking, or organizing. The shift has already occurred, it's just that most people don't know it. Or perhaps, they know it, but the don't know what it means to them, or what they should do."
Imagine that while playing a game of baseball, the umpire calls time out and the coaches from both teams and a few of the players meet on the pitcher's mound to change the rules of the game.
After a brief conference on the hill, the umpire yells, "Play ball!" Instantly, you recognize that something is wrong, but the umpire doesn't complain, and the coaches don't complain, and enough of the players seem contented and doing well, so you just stay quiet and get more and more confused as you do worse and worse in an environment, that just moments ago, you were thriving in.
This is exactly what has happened in our economy, only there was no conference on the hill (or was there). The rules of the economic game have changed, and most have no idea. They are playing by rules that no longer apply, wondering why they aren't getting results. They become more and more confused about why they are doing worse and worse in seemingly the same environment, that just months or years ago, they were thriving in.
Recently, I read a story about a man sitting in a hotel room watching a fly try to escape his room by bashing his head into the closed window over and over and over again. It was as though he was saying, "Ok, that didn't work. I'll try harder!" And again, he flew as fast as he could and bang! He cracks his head on the window again, and says, "Ok, that didn't work. I'll try harder!" And again he flew as fast as he could and bang! He cracks his head on the window again, and never escapes. Meanwhile, 10 feet away, there was an open door to freedom. And had the fly been willing to change, he could have reached his goal and escaped to freedom.
This is what so many are trying to do. They are trying to get better results from doing the same thing.
My message is, "Stop doing the same thing!" Just because you've been a teacher, a contractor, a mortgage broker, real estate professional or in any other profession for 5, 10, 20 or even 40 years, doesn't mean that's what you always have to be.
If you can't make a living doing what you've always done, change!
If you keep getting laid off, change!
If you feel like you are bashing your head into the window, change!

Things have changed...
