The Power of Commitment August 25, 2010

3 Great Quotes on Commitment

There have been many things said about the power of commitment. Books have been written, and quotes have been coined  about it by the dozens. One of my favorite quotes on commitment comes from Jeff Olson, author of the Slight Edge. He teaches, “Commitment is doing the thing you said you would do long after the mood you said it in has left you.”

Zig Ziglar says, “Most people are committed like a Kamikaze pilot on his 39th mission. That one gets a smile out of me every time.

Those are pretty good, but the quote below is my favorite.

Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back. Concerning all acts of initiative (and creation), there is one elementary truth, the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans: that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then Providence moves too.

All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred. A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one’s favor all manner of unforeseen incidents and meetings and material assistance, which no man could have dreamed would have come his way.

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, German writer; W.H. Murray, The Scottish Himalayan Expedition, 1951

Isn't that incredible?

C.S. Hughes on Commitment

Let me put this quote in my words with some commentary.

Until you are truly committed, there is always the possibility of you dragging your feet, or throwing in the towel, quitting, or more cowardly, just quietly back-stepping into the shadows of mediocrity. No matter your goal, your desire, your definite major purpose or chief aim, there is one basic truth that you must know in order to see your ideas and goals come to fruition. It's this; in the very moment that you truly and whole heartedly commit yourself, THEN Providence moves too! So many are going at life alone. They never engage the Power of Providence. Not that Providence wasn't always there and willing to assist, it most certainly was. But most never engage Providence. When a person is committed, they have stepped into a place of faith. And it is faith that unlocks the coffer of miracles.

How does one with no faith perform a miracle? He can not. And how can one with no faith accomplish her goal. She can not. Faith grows into full blown commitment, and commitment reels in the divine assistance of Providence. This is the difference between those who try and fail, and those who just simply do.

Providence defined is the protective care of God. I don't know about you, but I want to invoke the protective care of God. Of course He cares for us anyways and always. But the question is, does He care about your goal? It's my belief that he doesn't care unless you do. And, what the quote above is saying is, that when you are committed to your goal, then God commits too. Incredible! And once God commits to your Goal, or in other words, commits to assisting you with the desires of your heart….

Then, all sorts of things will begin to happen that would have never otherwise occurred. As a result of your faith and commitment, Providence will cause that a whole stream of events will flow into your life, seemingly magically raising in your favor all manner of unforeseen incidents and meetings and material assistance. All the people you need to meet, you will meet. The leaders you need to attract, will arrive. The sales you need, the speech you need to perfect, the relationship, the money you need to make, the assistance of the right people, the mentor, the coach, the publisher, the designer… anything you need in order to accomplish your goal will mysteriously and divinely show up in your life.

And in the end, when success is perched upon your mantel, and you have experienced the pinnacle, the very top of the mountain, and possess the perspective and enlightenment of achievement, you will look back on your experience, and if you are honest, will realize you had Help. As hard as you worked, you had Help. As much pain as you endured, you had Help. Even with all the sacrifice, you had Help. And it is that Help that every high achiever should desire. And when you get it, you can and will enjoy every harmonious desire of your heart. And that, is the Power of Commitment.

……….”the moment one definitely commits oneself, then Providence moves too.

All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred. A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one’s favor all manner of unforeseen incidents and meetings and material assistance, which no man could have dreamed would have come his way.”

This is so TRUE! I recently had some dramatic and challenging changes come into my life. My world has been turned upside down. I felt inside that I needed to move away, try someplace fresh, and attempt to leave the negative experiences behind me. I was scared and hesitant to do this; it meant leaving my friends, leaving my relatives, leaving my home, and I lost my job to boot! But, the very day that I decided that I would start anew, in more positive soil, someplace else, I saw blessings and assistance begin to flow from the Heavens, through friends and strangers both, to enable me to make this difficult move. Are things easy and perfect? No. But am I clearly seeing a Divine assistance since I committed myself to the necessary change? Yes! And now I start over, in fresh soil, and under a positive light!
We can all see this in our own lives! Excellent message, Chris!!!

@Josef S.: Again, awesome remarks. Commitment is so powerful!! Unfortunately, most people never experience the magic, because as Zig Ziglar says, “they are committed like a Kamikaze pilot on his 39th mission!” I love that! Thanks for being awesome! CSH

This is an incredible article!!! I am able to be brutally honest and say,I wasn’t committed as I should have. However after reading this article I had to take take a tour(Inner inventory)and get back to focusing on the goal!!This is one reason it is so important to keep that goal in front of you!!!!I didn’t and now there’s a price to pay!! These articles are so razor sharp there’s no reason to lose focus!!! Thanks Mr.Hughes for your mentoring and coaching!!!

This is hot, some times you think you are committed to reach your doald, but when you look back and ask your self I’m I really committed 100%? or can I do better than what am doing.
do not go back and start over just rethink what you are doing wrong and keep on going.

  • Mark Schlenker

I appreciate your total committment to this process on my behalf. thank you for that!

As I was reading I was reminded of the simple fact that I cannot commit to something, anything, unless I truly believe in it. Jesus said, “why do you say to me Lord, Lord and then you do not do the things I teach”. I guess I look at it like a chair. We don’t have a problem sitting down in a chair, without reservation. We believe the chair will do what a chair is designed to do. So, without reservation or a second thought, we sit down into the chair, putting all of our weight and all of our trust in that chair. In the same way, we need to do what you are saying. We need to trust God and His promise to give ALL GOOD THINGS to us, if we will trust Him and committ to the things He is teaching us, through His word and through you, then we will see His blessings flow into our life.

To continue with the chair analogy and what I got out of your teaching today, I don’t have to struggle any more, if I commit to that chair. Now I can rest in His chair and allow His blessings to flow into my life, as long as I am committed to remain in the chair, but the minute I stop trusting the chair, or its ability to support me, I will lose FAITH and then I will begin to look for ways that I CAN make up for the percieved lack in what I used to TRUST.

When I get uncomfortable in the chair, it is because I am uncomfortable with TRUST and COMMITMENT NOT because God has stopped Protecting and Taking Care of me. So, I begin to move around and eventually I look for a new chair, something “fresh” and “new”. I have decided that, this time, I will deal with my discomfort and I will work through the process of learning to TRUST and to STAY COMMITED, so that I can receieve ALL GOOD THINGS!

Thank You C.S. Hughes, I am grateful for you. You are a gift from God.

Until you are truly committed, there is always the possibility of you dragging your fee..just quietly back-stepping into the shadows of mediocrity. this is me . take a wall to climb over. I will try and fail then I will hind in the day time watch others get over with help then at night go back and try by my self. and fail but never get over. and NEver ask for help face to face. this is easy on the web but in person chris I would be so scared to ask any of this. this page has realy helped me to ask and get out my shell I have done more this week in my life because Im starting to belive in my self as a leader and not a follower. thanks for everything you have become to go on and teach others shooting for are stars in the sky.

@Ryancanhelp: You are growing by leaps and bounds! I have observed growth in you in the comments you have made here in just 5 weeks since we’ve been here. Success is a process, and it takes time. Use this as a visual for yourself…. All cream will rise to the top. Some cream is near the top and can get to the top in short order. Some cream is further down in the pail, and has further to travel and more work to do, but if in deed it is cream, it will rise to the top. You are on your way pal! CSH

My committment just gained the strength of recall….thanks! We are all very interesting beings. Full of wonder and fear at the same time…but, FAITH is the power to do all things. This one thing I have learned over and over in my short time on this earth. How do we give faith away? Please join me in the experiment of faith…don’t limit yourself, or Heavenly Father…just believe.

    Great stuff, Chris. Thanks!

I am sitting here crying. I believe in this wholeheartedly. I have been there before. This is how I was able to free myself from abuse, and become healthy and attractive to the love of my life (who has healed my heart). My frustration is that I now know it’s possible and am trying to do it more consciously now. I’ve had an incredible amount of things bulldoze me over time and again over the last few years, and I think they’ve really bruised my confidence or something–made me really gunshy–you know, the kinds of things where your intent was pure but it backfired on you with the greatest of evils. I keep picking myself up and recommitting, then something else comes along to bulldoze me down! I really want to figure it out and get back to the top of my game! I think if I just keep reading this over and over, perhaps it will sink in enough to help more happen in my life. Thank you for ringing so true to my soul once again.

  • Bgfields

Chris, you truly know how to tell like it is and I fully mean that straight from my heart. It’s a crying shame that more people do not realize this or they are just not aware of it. And of course there are those who would and never will believe in it. Those who realize this or are not aware of this may be able to be cured. But for those who will never believe I do not have the answer. If you’ve got the answer, please let me know.
Keep up the great work to keep those who are beginning to succeed and for those who have already succeeded and for those such as myself who are still trying to get going.

Thanks for this awesome motivational post! I’ve struggled with full commitment in the past and have suffered because of that. Now I am fully committed to my purpose and you are right, things happen.

    Coincidence? I don’t think so.
