Why Get Motivated When it Just Wears Off? July 28, 2010

There are critics of “motivation” who say, “Why get motivated, when it's just gonna wear off?” The best response I've heard to this concern is, “So does bathing, but it's still a good idea once in a while.” Yes, motivation is, for the most part, for most people, temporary. So why do it? Because of what you can get done in your state of motivation. People, who, when in a high state of motivation, many times are able to accomplish much more that they do in an unmotivated state. This is why the Basic System for Success is so effective, because it was designed to keep you in a “motivated state,” and keep you away from people who will be a drain on you.

Each day as you read good books and listen to positive, motivational and educational audios, you remain in a heightened emotional state. However, every now and again, you need to throw some gas on the fire and take your motivation to whole new level. You do that by attending live seminars. This is the third step in the Basic System for Success: Attend a class, workshop, or seminar every 90 days.

Seminars, workshops and classes are powerful tools for helping you take your life to the next level. Below, is just a partial list of the benefits of attending these events.

  • New information

  • New motivation

  • Improving your skills

  • Meet like minded people

  • Helps you get out of your comfort zone

  • Great place to do business networking

  • Confirmation of what you have been learning in your books and audios

I have attended literally hundreds of seminars and training events in my life ranging from no cost up to several thousand dollars. Some have been better than others, but all have been beneficial. But we should not be limited to only these types of events. Taking a language course or a public speaking course, would be just as beneficial as a “motivational” seminar over the long haul of your life. My mentor, Mr. Bailey, once said, “Most personal development coaches out there are teaching their students to read books, listen to to audios and attend seminars. They don't understand that if a man enrolls in a trade school and learns to be a mechanic, THAT is as much personal development as reading any book or listening to any audio, if not significantly more so.” So don't limit yourself to just “motivational seminars.” Any class or event that will motivate you, educate you, improve your skills, inspire you and get you out of your normal routine, is a personal development or self improvement activity easily fitting into the category we're discussing today.

I've had hundreds of people over the past 11 years ask me what seminars and workshops I recommend. There are a ton of good ones out there, but for every good one, there's probably 10 bad ones. I have given you a list of books to read, and, a list of audios to listen to, but rather than create a list of seminars here, I will just email you about “must attend” seminars (like the ones I do :) ) that are worthy of passing on. I won't be doing any more “open” seminars in 2010. I'll be doing some private events, but none open to the public. However, I will be doing my first open event of 2011 in January or February, so, make sure you subscribe to my One Minute Mentoring program (right side of website), so I can let you know when we ink the deal.

Before I go, I want to do a little accountability with you. When was the last time you attended a seminar, workshop or class? Was it more than 90 days ago? Do you want to break out of the box and take your life to a place that most are not even willing to dream about? When is the next class you will take? Do you have it scheduled?  Is it less than 90 days from your last class/seminar? If you have never attended one of these events, or it's been a long time, I will make one recommendation that is available  in virtually every town, and is a great self-improvement program, and is little to no cost, and is occuring weekly. It's called Toastmasters International.

From their own website, here are the bennies of joining:

Great suggestion, Mr. Hughes, to attend a class, workshop, or seminar every 90 days or so. I love learning and believe in lifelong learning. So I will likely take another course soon. The thought of participating in Toastmasters is very appealing too. I will check out my local chapter! Thank you for your help and I look forward to finding out more details about your upcoming private seminars.

Good post Chris – I was a member of our local toastmasters for a year and I loved it, but I stopped going because I had other business commitments on the same evenings. As there will be a lot of public speaking in my future I really should start going again.

One life changing weekend for me was T Harv Ekers MMI. I'd recommend that to anyone who wants to change quickly, but as you say you have to keep it up. This is why events are crucial in MLM.
